Renowned Ugandan rapper, entrepreneur and hip-hop activist Sylvester Kabombo has officially re-released his classic 2010 hit, “Akaseera” (featuring Ssavoo). Alongside the drop, the legendary lyricist shared a deeply personal look into his professional evolution, revealing how the track’s original 2010 release unexpectedly launched a secondary career path that he now dominates.
Background and Release:
“Akaseera” is a standout track off the critically acclaimed conscious hip-hop 13-track and 48-minute long compilation album “Ziva Muntuuyo” by Ugandan hip-hop pioneer Sylvester Kabombo. The song was born out of a raw, organic collaboration featuring Ssavoo, a notable member of the legendary Ugandan hip-hop collective Bonsantule. The track is a timeless blueprint of Ugandan hiphop poetry. It highlights the sophisticated, dense wordplay characteristic of Luga-flow artists from the preceding golden era. In the song, the artists express a deep, yearning desire to secure just a brief window of time—a small, uninterrupted moment—with “her”. Their desire is to use this precious slice of time on record to strip away all distractions, pull “her” close, and lay out the genuine depth of what they truly feel for “her”.
Reflecting on the song’s initial launch over a decade ago, Kabombo expressed gratitude to his early community network while revealing the barriers he faced as an independent artist at the time.
“When this song came out in 2010, Felix from BPU then volunteered to do [a] cover art,” Kabombo shared. “It’s his artwork that kicked off my printing career. Thanks again Felix”
However, as music consumption shifted entirely online, the original artwork became a hurdle. The primary reason for the re-release and the creation of new artwork was the need for a high-resolution version optimized for modern digital streaming platforms.
“Fast forward to 2026, I design my own posters, and design for other people too,” Kabombo added proudly. “This skill has greatly improved my work ethic.”
The “Ziva Muntuuyo” album was initially pressed and distributed strictly on CD in September 2014. Following sustained public demand from the hip-hop community, Kabombo formally launched the project across global digital streaming platforms in July 2021.
