Your mind can become your greatest weapon or your greatest limitation. The thoughts you nurture shape your emotions, choices, and ultimately the reality you experience.

THE POWER THAT SHAPES YOUR REALITY

The Mind:

In all our post-natal life, the mind acts a canvas, a blank slate waiting to be filled with the colors of our experiences. It is the source of our character, our personality, and our overall outlook on life. It is the epicenter of our existence, the source of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Yet, despite its untold influence, the mind has capacity for creating emotions, and perceptions that can be both creative and destructive.

When negative thoughts, like dark clouds, spawn around the horizon of our minds, they cast a shadow over our lives. These thoughts can be the result of unpleasant circumstances, learned thinking habits, or simply the natural response to stress and adversity. Yet, it is in these moments that we have the power to choose how we respond. We can allow these thoughts to condense and lose energy, or we can multiply them, giving them life and vitality. The choice is usually ours, and it is this choice that determines the trajectory of life.

The Unity of Mind and Reality:

The notion that ‘all is mind and mind is everything’ is a concept that has been explored by philosophers and spiritual leaders for centuries. At its core, this idea suggests that the mind is not just a passive observer of reality, but rather the creator of reality itself. In other words, the mind is not just a reflection of the world around us, but the world itself is a reflection of the mind.

According to this view, the mind is the fundamental substance of the universe, and everything that exists is a manifestation of the mind’s creative power. This means that our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions are not just internal experiences, but are actually shaping the world around us. That the mind is not just a passive recipient of sensory information, but is actively creating the reality that we experience. This idea has implications for our understanding of the nature of reality and our place within it.

Power of Mind, Authority of Self:

When you surrender your power of decision to others, allowing them to dictate the bounds of your peace and destiny, you become a captive of circumstance, a slave to the whims of those who hold the reins. When uttered words seem to get at you, tilting your thought process and undermining your decision-making abilities, it’s as if you’ve handed the helm of your own ship to these external invisible forces, allowing them to chart your course and determine your fate. You have relinquished control of the steering wheel, surrendering the pivot of your mental wellbeing to the whims of others.

Your survival is then contingent upon the benevolence of others, your happiness a fleeting dream that can be snatched away at any moment. In this state, you have become vulnerable to the turmoil of emotions that will ravage your inner landscape like a tempest.

Creator and Creation:

Creation is not just about the external visible world that was fashioned by an omniscience, but also about the internal ones. As a creator, you possess the extraordinary ability to bring forth entire worlds, conjure meanings, and craft phrases that control emotions, ideas, and experiences.

The mind of the Creator is a realm where the impossible becomes possible, where the boundaries of time and space are stretched to their limits, and where the imagination knows no bounds. As a creator, you are a guardian of this realm, the fashioner of its secrets, and the keeper of its mysteries. And with each thought, each word, and each creation, you bring forth a new reality, a new world, and a new you. It’s as if you have the power of magic at your fingertips, where the mere study of sound and word patterns unlocks the secrets of the universe. With each thought, you imbue the surroundings with life, energy, and purpose, transforming the abstract into the tangible.

Creations are not just mere figments of imagination, but living, breathing expressions of your deepest desires, fears, and passions. Places, people, and things are all linked together by your thoughts, forming a rich experience that is uniquely yours.

As you create, you are not just crafting objects or ideas, but entire realities yet to unfold. Words are like seeds that take root in the soil of mind, sprouting forth into a lush landscape of meaning and significance. Each phrase, each sentence, and each story is a manifestation of your inner world, a reflection of your deepest longings, and your highest aspirations.

How Interpretation is key:

This phenomenon is beautifully illustrated by a personal experience I had with growing home plants. I had always been fascinated by the art of nurturing life, and I spent countless hours tending to those plants, watching them grow and thriving. However, some individuals, fueled by superstition, viewed this as a form of witchcraft or dark magic. Other naysayers would whisper to each other, exchanging nervous glances, and occasionally, they would even ask me to reveal the secrets of my supposed “magic.” On the other hand, there were those who saw my green thumb as an extension of my character, a reflection of kindness and compassion. They marveled at the ability to coax life out of seemingly barren soil, and they would often compliment me on patience and dedication. To them, the fact that the plants thrived under my care was a sign that I was a likable and trustworthy person, someone who possessed a gentle touch.

What struck me most, however, was that both interpretations were rooted in the same observation – the ability to grow plants. Yet, the meanings each group assigned to this observation were worlds apart, underlining the subjective nature of interpretation and the power it holds in shaping our perceptions of reality.

The interplay between thoughts, emotions, and brain chemistry is a fascinating phenomenon that reveals the intricate mechanisms that govern our inner lives.

“Dope-amine” Party:

Adrenaline, for instance, is the hormone that prepares our body for the “fight or flight” response, flooding your system with a surge of energy and alertness.

Dopamine, in particular, is the life of the party. It is the chemical that regulates your pleasure and reward centers. It’s like the ultimate party planner, making sure you feel good about yourself.

But here’s the thing – our brains are capable of producing ‘natural highs’ from our own hormones, and it’s easier than you think. For example, have you ever experienced the thrill of accomplishment after completing a challenging task? That’s dopamine at work, folks! Or how about the rush of excitement you feel when you’re about to embark on a new adventure? That’s dopamine again, baby!

And let’s not forget about the sweet release of endorphins that comes with a good laugh or a great workout. It’s like our brains are saying, “Hey, you know what? You’re awesome, and I’m going to give you a natural high to prove it.” But, of course, there’s a catch. When we’re constantly seeking external sources of satisfaction, whether it’s through social media, video games, or other forms of instant gratification, we create a cycle of addiction that’s hard to break. It’s like our brains are saying, “Hey, I need more, more, MORE!” And before you know it, you’re hooked on the dopamine high and can’t function without it.

However, when these chemicals are triggered by negative thoughts and emotions, they create a self-reinforcing cycle that perpetuates distress. When we’re consumed by egotism, your brain releases a cascade of chemicals that reinforce your sense of self-importance, making it increasingly difficult to let go of attachment to your ego.

Egotism, in fact, is often the antithesis of knowledge, as it creates a narrow and rigid perspective that diminishes your capacity for understanding. Conversely, when driven by a desire for knowledge and self-awareness, your brain releases chemicals that promote a sense of curiosity and wonder, allowing you to expand your horizons and broaden our perspectives.

Dopamine, in particular, plays a crucial role in this process, as it’s the spirit of feeling self-rewarded and motivated to seek out new experiences. When chasing passions, dopamine is the fuel that drives you, releasing a steady stream of pleasure and satisfaction that motivates you to continue pursuing your goals.

Adversity, Challenges That Fuel Growth:

Adversity, in all its forms, is often viewed as a hindrance to success and happiness. However, every challenge, every setback, and every difficult situation holds within it a seed of equivalent benefit. The benefits of adversity are not always immediately apparent, and they often require us to dig deeper and look beyond the surface level. In reality, criticism is an opportunity to learn and grow. It can be used to refine ideas, to strengthen resolve, and to develop a ‘thicker skin’

I still chuckle to this day when I think about the epic scuffle that went down between two property brokers in our village. It was like a scene straight out of a Bollywood movie, complete with dramatic music and over-the-top dialogue. So, here’s what happened: the village broker, let’s call him Mukasa, had been dealing with the local property market for years. He was the go-to guy for all your real estate needs, and everyone in the village knew and respected him. But then, one day, a new player entered the scene, Kintu – a suave and sophisticated town broker. Kintu at first was like a fish out of water in our humble village, but he quickly made himself at home by charming the locals with his smooth talk and fancy city ways. However, his charms didn’t just stop at the villagers – he also managed to woo Mukasa’s wife, much to the latter’s dismay. Mukasa was not a happy man, and he made sure everyone knew it. He confronted Kintu in the middle of the village market, loudly proclaiming that he was about to teach the town guy a lesson he would never forget. But what was really funny was that his anger was not just directed at Kintu – it was also directed at himself. He felt really inadequate and less competent than Kintu.

Weapon of Thought:

Thought is indeed man’s greatest weapon, and yet, it’s also a double-edged sword. When your thoughts are disconnected from your true self, they can lead to judgments about others that are not only inaccurate but also damaging. These judgments can awaken and resuscitate emotional overtones that affect not only your perceptions of others but also perceptions of self.

When we judge others as being better or worse than us, we’re often reflecting our own insecurities and biases. We may feel angry or resentful towards someone who we perceive as having more power or status than us, or we may feel inferior or unworthy in comparison to someone who we admire. Similarly, when we judge others as being wise or unwise, loved or unloved, we’re often projecting our own self-perceptions onto them.

These judgments are often based on ideas and beliefs that we’ve incorporated into our sense of self, often without even realizing it. You may have been told by others that you’re not good enough, or that you’re not worthy of love and respect. You may have internalized these negative messages and incorporated them into your self-image.

But these judgments and self-perceptions are not fixed or absolute.

A Sting of Hopelessness:

I’ve been there too – those moments of hopelessness, powerlessness, and frustration that come when things don’t go according to plan. When it feels like the world is conspiring against you, and you’re left feeling like you’re drowning in a sea of uncertainty. I remember those times when I just wanted to be in a meditative silence, but my friends in the room couldn’t stop chattering about their own accomplishments. It was like they were trying to suck the air out of the room, leaving me anxious.

And then, of course, there are those external factors that are out of our hands – like how people we interact with act or react. At that moment, it feels like we’re at the mercy of their whims and fancies, and it can be infuriating.

It is precisely in those moments of frustration that you need to stay open to talk and conversation. It’s easy to get caught up in your own thoughts and emotions, and to think that no one else can possibly understand what you’re going through.

The Power of Words, One Conversation at a Time:

The words of Matthew 12:37, “For by your words, you’ll be justified and by your words, you’ll be condemned,” underpin the immense influence that words have on our lives. They are a potent force, capable of inspiring transformation, healing, and growth, or conversely, causing destruction. The words you choose when you speak, both to self and others, hold the power to shape your perceptions, attitudes, and ultimately, your reality.

The way you communicate with self, through self-talk, is particularly crucial. The subtle distinction between “I can try to make it work” and “I can make it work” can significantly impact your mindset and approach to challenges. The former phrase, laced with doubt and uncertainty, leads to a lack of confidence and a sense of powerlessness.

In contrast, the latter phrase, infused with determination and conviction, can empower you to take action and overcome obstacles. Similarly, the words “I need to go” versus “I want to go” can dramatically alter our perspective on a situation, shifting from obligation to desire.

In life, we often recall significant moments when words had a big impact on us. Perhaps it was a heartfelt speech at our graduation party, or a comment from your primary four teacher that shaped your entire self-perception and influenced your career choices.

The words of loved ones, too, become particularly vivid, capable of breaking you out of our old patterns of thinking and introducing new perspectives that you may have never considered before. Words do stay, etched in memory, long after the conversation has ended.

In daily interactions, the power of words is constantly at play. A seemingly innocuous conversation can quickly turn sour when someone utters a hurtful or thoughtless remark. Conversely, a well-chosen phrase or a kind word can sweeten the atmosphere and redirect the conversation towards a more positive and uplifting direction.

Self-talk:

Self-talk is the internal dialogue that shapes perception of self, your abilities, and potential. It’s the way you describe ‘yourself to yourself and others’, often unconsciously, through the words you choose to use. Self-talk is the mirror that reflects your self-image, and what you see in that mirror can either empower or limit.

The common phrase “If you believe it, you can achieve it” holds a deeper truth. Our beliefs, shaped by self-talk. When you believe in yourself and your abilities, you open up to new possibilities and opportunities. All things including daily routine tasks you do are based off a basic belief that they can be done.

Conversely, when you doubt or criticize self, you create obstacles that hinder your progress. The phrase “from belief, you beget achievement” highlights the direct relationship between your thoughts and accomplishments.

The words we use in our self-talk are not just innocent expressions; they carry significant psychological weight. Phrases like “I’m not good enough” or “I’ll never be able to do this” can become self-limiting prophecies.

The psychology behind every day phrases reveals the power of words to shape our reality. When we say “I’m just being realistic,” we may actually be perpetuating a negative mindset that holds us back from pursuing our dreams. The phrase “I’m not lucky” can become a self-fulfilling utterance, causing you to overlook opportunities and miss out on worthwhile experiences.

When you focus on flaws and weaknesses, you create a negative self-image that undermines self-esteem.

In the next article, we shall look at how Cross cultural communication and the importance of context.
