XENSON ART SPACE: TALES OF REIMAGINING BARK CLOTH

A recent panel discussion at Xenson Art Space brought together artists, visitors and people from different generations to exchange ideas and experiences around Olubugo Luboggola, an exhibition centred on Uganda’s barkcloth and its cultural meanings. This exhibition brought together people from different generations, experiences and perspectives to reflect on Uganda’s cultural heritage through barkcloth, locally known as olubugo.

According to the art space, the gathering went beyond a formal panel turning into a discussion. Conversations continued between visitors and artists as people moved through the exhibition.

For audiences looking for more than simply viewing artworks on a wall, the event offered a glimpse into what Xenson Art Space is increasingly positioning itself as: a place to look, listen, question, learn and connect.

More Than a Gallery

Located on Kenneth Dale Drive, Plot 58 in Kamwokya, Xenson Art Space is a multidisciplinary creative space founded in 2019 by Ugandan multidisciplinary artist Xenson. Its mission is centred on nurturing artists and providing opportunities for creatives to exhibit, showcase their work, engage in dialogue and build networks that can contribute to their social and economic empowerment.

The space has become a platform for exhibitions, workshops, art talks, live performances, film screenings, fashion pop-ups and other creative programmes.

Its work is built around the idea that art should not exist in isolation from society.

Through its “Living Library” programme, for example, Xenson Art Space connects younger creatives with established artists, collectors and art enthusiasts, creating opportunities for knowledge and experience to flow between generations.

Over the years, Xenson Art Space has hosted a range of exhibitions exploring identity, culture, gender, society and contemporary life. Its 2026 programme has included exhibitions such as Embracing Her Essence Edition 2, Native in a New World and, more recently, Maaso Awo showcasing diverse voices and artistic perspectives.

“Xenson Art Space is not asking people simply to come and look at art. It is inviting them to become part of the conversation.”, says proprietor, Xenson
