Campos World, real name Alfred Baraka Musinda, is a spoken-word artist born in Tezo Ward on Kilifi Coast, Kenya. He writes primarily in English, Swahili, Sheng and local coastal dialects, often fusing them within a single performance piece to add reach, depth and accessibility.
Coming To Be:
Having lost his father at the age of six. His mother became an early pillar that shaped his gift of gab, pushing him through periods of self doubt and refusing to let the talent fade.
That early foundation later found formal structure when he pursued and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Drama and Theatre Studies with IT at Maseno University, a feat that turned his passion into profession.
Poetry arrived less as a deliberate choice than as an inevitable outlet. “I didn’t choose poetry; poetry chose me,” Musinda often remarks.
What began as a private way to process emotion quickly evolved into a conduit for storytelling. His first significant project was a tribute to his late father, an intimate piece that also resonated with others who had experienced early bereavement.
The work opened doors. His debut stage appearance came through Jukwaa Arts Production on the programme Art Cocktail, which convinced him greater heights were possible.
Musical Footprint:
His EP, The Book of a Poet, is about the everyday realities poets go through like personal struggle, environmental pressures, the simultaneous tasks of empowering others while protecting one’s own sanity. Mental health, growth and belief sit at its core.
His live performances are defined by commanding stage presence and stark, husky delivery that holds audience attention even when the subject matter becomes uncomfortable. He frequently tackles currently sensitive national issues such as corruption, sea pollution and its endangerment to marine life, street violence and youth in leadership. Alongside his live stage work, Campos also shares short instagram reels of signature pieces such as Confessions of a Mad Poet, Psycho, Hocus Pocus, Bahari Uhuru, Me Ni Leader, Kitabu Kilichomeka and Sauti Yangu Ni Tarumbeta.
In 2025, he emerged as First Runners Up at East Africa Poetic Hour Battle which was organized under the theme: “From the Plate to the Policy Table: Youth Taking Their Place in Governance” at Baraza Media Lab in Kisumu. He has also participated in poetry competitions like Slam Africa, WritAfrica and others.
Present and Future:
Today, he works independently while open to collaboration and investment. Recognition through initiatives such as Kilifi Rising Stars, supported by the County Government of Kilifi, where he emerged as Second Runners Up in 2026, has already translated talent into practical empowerment, including a bodaboda that keeps him mobile and able to pursue performances.
Looking ahead, two projects signal the next phase of growth. An upcoming poetry collection, A Stretch of a Young Man’s Thoughts, examines mental health among the youth, the daily battle for personal growth, and the societal pressures that accompany the desire to become better.
He is also preparing to launch Vibe Na Mike, a poetry event whose Swahili name invites audiences simply to “vibe with the mike.”
