Stayput’s ‘Third World Graduate’ On the Harsh Reality of Uganda’s Jobless Graduate

EP: RANDOM STORIES | THIRD WORLD GRADUATE

For many young Ugandans, graduation is the beginning of a new chapter and a moment of celebration and hope. But beneath the photographs, ululations and congratulatory messages is a reality check that many fresh graduates quietly fear: what happens after the degree?

Ugandan rapper Stayput confronts this question on “Third World Graduate,” a track off his “Random Stories” EP released in 2025. Rapping in both English and Acholi, Stayput comments on the difficult transition from university life into Uganda’s unforgiving job market. It highlights the irony of graduating with academic qualifications only to discover that the professional world demands something the graduate has not yet had the opportunity to acquire, experience.

For the fresh graduate, job hunting is an exhausting cycle. Employers ask for years of experience, while the graduate struggles to secure that first opportunity that would allow them to gain it. Applications are sent, offices visited and CVs distributed, often without knowing whether the next opportunity will come through merit or a personal connection.

Stayput’s portrayal of this experience goes beyond unemployment statistics. “Third World Graduate” puts the listener inside the mind of the young person going through it. Even the graduation ceremony itself takes on a different meaning. While family members and friends celebrate the achievement, the graduand is expected to smile, pose for photographs and receive the congratulations. Yet somewhere beneath that smile is the anxiety of entering a world where the financial safety net of parental pocket money is no longer guaranteed and the degree, which was once seen as the ticket to a better life marks the beginning of another struggle.

Once the graduate enters the streets in search of employment, another danger emerges: the temptation of quick money. With financial pressure mounting, Ponzi schemes and other get-rich-quick promises can appear increasingly attractive. They offer the illusion of escaping unemployment through a small investment and the promise of fast returns.

Coming from Northern Uganda, Stayput’s ability to effortlessly switch between English and Acholi gives Random Stories an identity rooted in his cultural background making its themes connect with a wider Ugandan audience.

Elsewhere on Random Stories, Stayput explores the softer side of life and relationships. “Undercover Lover” is a dedication to a singular romantic interest while “Still In Love,” is a love confession, an ode to the persisting romantic feelings.
