ZEDMONK RETURNS FOR A SECOND SHOT AT THE GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

Ugandan rapper Zedmonk Ssabatontomi is preparing to make another attempt at the Guinness World Records title for the longest rap marathon by an individual, a challenge he first took on in 2024. The second attempt comes after a remarkable first run.

From Bulenga to the Stage:

Zedmonk Ssabatontomi, born Kabuubi Akram Zamunyo, began rapping in 2019 during his Senior Four vacation. His first recorded release, Byokola, was a dedication to Andy Events Music and promoter Zest, whom he credits for his early musical breakthrough.

But before establishing himself through recorded music, Zedmonk was building a reputation as a freestyler and battle rapper.

In 2020, he represented Bulenga on the Street Credit show aired on Magic One TV, where he took part in more than 150 rap battles. His performances earned him recognition as a Verbal King within the ‘Rap What I See’ and ‘Rap What I Say’ formats, building a reputation that would later enforce his Ssabatontomi identity.

His rise continued with a defining release, Work Si Myaka, a song that birthed a fashion brand. The song’s impact was seen at the 2022 MTN UG Hip-Hop Awards, where Zedmonk won the Rookie of the Year award. His growing profile also brought nominations and recognition beyond the MTN awards. He has been nominated in Entertainment Founder of the Year at FOY Awards Africa, Next Rated Entertainer at the JudeLucan Awards, Male Talented Rising Artist at the Bivulu Awards, Hip-Hop Artist of the Year at the Ghana Young Entertainers Awards, and Urban Inspirational Artist of the Year at the Gospel Choice Music Awards.

May 3, 2024:

After publicity tours on radio and TV, the hype and fanfare headlined by Uganda Music Association’s Phina Mugerwa, Zedmonk’s first Guinness World Records attempt began on May 3, 2024, at Namaste Restaurant and Bar in Kampala.

At the time, the official record stood at 48 hours, one minute and 10 seconds, held by Japanese rapper PONEY. On the second day, he pushed beyond the 48-hour benchmark and continued. The marathon was graced with rain, forcing some spectators and people overseeing the event to seek shelter yet he rapped on.

By the end of the challenge, Zedmonk had reached approximately 75 hours and 21 minutes. He stopped short of his original 80-hour target following medical advice after going two nights without sleep.

However, surpassing a benchmark during an attempt is not the same as becoming the official record holder; Guinness World Records must review and verify the video evidence before recognising a new record.

“We have proved that we can do it and if it requires us to do it again, we shall do it.” says the rapper.
